Welcome to Arabic Calligraphy Design. I practice traditional and contemporary Arabic calligraphy, and do custom calligraphy for tattoos, design work, and original pieces. All my work is hand-written, I do not use computer fonts in my designs. To get started, have a look at the Styles page to see some of the different styles I normally work in, or if you’re interested in a tattoo, click the Tattoos page. When you’re ready, send me an email at arabic.calligrapher@gmail.com, and we can work together on what you’d like designed.

If you are interested in having a tattoo designed in Arabic calligraphy, I would be more than happy to work with you on a design. I’ll do everything from single words to long lines of poetry. Email me at arabic.calligrapher(at)gmail.com, and we can work together on what works best. The above gallery is just a small preview of what I’ve been working on lately.

I can also design tattoos in Persian, Urdu, Kurdish, Sindhi, Uighur or any other language written in Arabic script (although I do not speak those languages, yet).

I also translate between Arabic and English (before coming to calligraphy I worked as a full-time Arabic translator), so if you have a word or phrase in English that you’d like translated into Arabic, I can do that for you as well. Translation is free with the purchase of a design.

How This Works

Here's how to order a design for a tattoo:

Email me (arabic.calligrapher(at)gmail.com) with what you would like written, and a little bit about the design you have in mind. I am happy to translate between English and Arabic. However, because I charge by the word and English phrases tend to be wordier, it may save on cost if you bring me the Arabic wording you would like.  You can have a look at my Styles page to get an idea of the different styles I work in, and see which jump out at you.

I will tell you the cost for different design options, you pay for it online here with any credit card, and I will email you the scan of the design by email within 2 weeks. If it will take longer, I will email you.

How it works is I will send you a high-res jpg when I’m done, and you print that out at the exact size you want it to be on your body, and then take that to the tattoo artist who will make a transfer.

If you would like something changed or tweaked I am more than happy to redesign it for you. I want this to be something you are entirely happy with, and could carry on your body. I only ask that when you request a change, that you be as specific as possible about the type of changes you would like to see.

I do not mail the original file, though if you are interested in the original piece, I am happy to discuss this.

All rates are per number of words in English. If you have already have a phrase in Arabic, it is per word in Arabic.

Linear or Figural?

I have two basic options for design styles: Linear and Figural.

Linear is text on a straight line, figural is ‘bunched up,’ in the shape of an object or animal, or otherwise non-linear.

Terms and Conditions:

-I retain the commercial rights to all calligraphy. In other words, these are for personal use, period. No commercial use.
-Please view my revision policies for info on redesigns.
-All calligraphy must be paid for in full before I start working. I’m sorry it has to be like this, you can thank those who decided not to pay.

What I will not do:

-Design tattoos of offensive phrases.
-Check the spelling of words you had translated. I am happy to translate, but only with the purchase of a design.
-Tell you if the Arabic tattoo you got is correct.
-Redesign a piece because you want to see it in a different style. I am happy to redesign in different styles, but the cost is $10/word.

Keep in mind, I do this work all by hand with a reed pen, these designs are not translated by a machine and then spit out of a computer. This is an analog cottage industry in a digital age, and ultimately I’m just one artist trying to do my thing.

Thanks,
Josh
